User Technical Requirements
Brightspace (D2L) Course Information System

Purpose
This document outlines the minimum and recommended technical requirements for
users accessing the Brightspace (D2L) learning platform for the PD4Me New Jersey
project. Adhering to these requirements ensures optimal system performance, security, and reliable user experience.
1. Supported Devices and Computer Platforms
Minimum Requirements
- Desktop or laptop computer (recommended for full functionality)
- Mobile devices (smartphones/tablets) are supported but not available for a limited number of tasks.
Supported Operating Systems
- Windows: Windows 10 or newer
- Mac: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or newer
- ChromeOS: Latest stable version
- Mobile OS:
- iOS 15 or newer
- Android 11 or newer
Recommendations
- Use a desktop or laptop for assignments, discussions, and assessments (i.e. preand post tests)
- Avoid completing high-stakes tasks (e.g., pre and post tests) on mobile devices
2. Internet Connectivity
- Reliable broadband internet connection (minimum 5 Mbps; 10+ Mbps
recommended) - Avoid public or unstable Wi-Fi when completing quizzes or submitting
assignments - Important Note: If you are using a workplace computer, depending on the organization’s firewall, you might not be able to access all features and course content in Brightspace. (see below for details)
3. Web Browser Requirements
Supported Browsers (Latest Versions Only)
- Google Chrome (recommended)
- Mozilla Firefox
- Microsoft Edge
- Safari (Mac users only)
Browser Settings
- Enable cookies and JavaScript
- Allow pop-ups for Brightspace
- Disable ad blockers or extensions that may interfere with content
Important Notes
- Always use the most current browser version
- Internet Explorer is not supported
4. Software and Plug-ins
- PDF reader (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Reader)
- Microsoft Office or compatible software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Updated media player for audio/video content
- Webcam and microphone (for virtual sessions)
5. Antivirus and Security Software
- Install and maintain active antivirus/anti-malware software
- Enable firewall protection if applicable
Best Practices
- Perform routine virus scans if possible
- Avoid downloading files from untrusted sources
- Think twice about using a family-shared computer (see details below)
- Log out of Brightspace after each session, especially on shared devices
6. System Updates and Maintenance
- Regularly install operating system updates
- Keep browsers and plugins up to date
- Restart devices periodically to ensure updates take effect
Why This Matters
Outdated systems may:
- Cause compatibility issues
- Increase security risks
- Impact assignment submissions or quiz performance
7. Use of Shared or Public Computers
If you must share a family device:
- Use separate user profiles when possible
- Always log out of your profile after each session
- Do not save your profile’s passwords in the browser
- Ensure other users do not interfere with active sessions or saved work
Public or Work Computers
- Use caution when accessing Brightspace
- Avoid completing exams or submitting sensitive work on public devices
- Do not download or store course materials locally
- Always:
- Log out completely
- Clear browser history/cache after use
8. Use of Work Computers
- Confirm that employer security settings allow access to Brightspace
- Some workplace networks may:
- Block certain features (video, uploads, discussion tools)
- Restrict downloads or external links
Recommendations
- Test access before completing required assignments
- Avoid relying solely on work devices for coursework
- Use a personal device when possible, for full functionality
9. File Management and Backup
- Save copies of all assignments locally and/or in cloud storage (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive)
- Use standard file formats (e.g., .docx, .pdf)
- Keep file names simple (avoid special characters)
10. Technical Support and Troubleshooting
Before Seeking Support
- Clear browser cache and cookies
- Try a different browser
- Restart your device
- Check internet connection
11. Accessibility Considerations
- Brightspace supports screen readers and accessibility tools
- Users should ensure their assistive technologies are up to date
